Description/Educational Objectives:
There isn’t really one through the standard of American English despite what we may all have been led to believe. I’ll be discussing how non-standard English is actually the “standard” of English, reviewing some forms of it as well as how to decode some of African American English.

My objectives are to leave the audience with a basic understanding of descriptive linguistics, some of the major components of African American English, and most importantly show them that all dialects are valid.

Presenter Bio:
E.K. Powell is the creative mind behind the What's Good English TikTok account and YouTube channel. He grew up in Peoria, Illinois, and graduated from Southern Illinois University. While traveling the world, he developed a love for language and linguistics. Through his social media, he hopes to share his love of language learning and show that AAVE is a language to be respected.
